Milfontes, a village at the estuary of the Mira River, had a troubled history in the face of the dangers of the sea. Most prominently, the case of 1590, when foreign pirates attacked Milfontes, razing the village completely. Facing this situation, the Fort of São Clemente was build between 1599 and 1602. Milfontes is one of the oldest parishes of Odemira, has more than 4,000 inhabitants and has amazing beaches.
